Press Release from American Cancer Society
RELAY FOR LIFE: A CELEBRATION OF MORE BIRTHDAYS
Every day more people are joining the movement to create a world with less cancer and more birthdays. Relay For Life fuels the movement’s growth, honors those that have been affected by cancer, and reminds us all how special one more candle, one more cake, and one more celebration with the people we love truly is. Summit Middle School is proud to be a part of this movement by hosting the sixth annual American Cancer Society Relay For Life of Southwest Allen County taking place at Summit Middle School’s track on June 5th at 9:00 am.
Relay For Life brings together friends, families, businesses, hospitals, schools, faith-based groups – people from all walks of life – all aimed at furthering the American Cancer Society’s efforts to save lives by helping people stay well, by helping them get well, by finding cures and by fighting back.
“Relay is a unique opportunity for our community to come together to celebrate people who have battled cancer, remember those we’ve lost, and fight back against the disease,” said Amy Simmons, Community Representative with the American Cancer Society. “Special guests of the event include local cancer survivors and their caregivers, who serve as a reminder that Southwest Allen County is not immune to this disease.”
The event is held overnight as individuals and teams camp out at the track, with the goal of keeping at least one team member on the track at all times to signify that cancer never sleeps. Teams do most of their fundraising prior to the event, but some teams also hold creative fundraisers at their campsites during Relay.
Team registration is $50.00 and there is not a participant registration fee. We do ask that those participating, but not on a team, do register either at the event or online prior to the event. www.relayforlife.org/southwestallencountyin. Nelson’s Chicken will be available, by donation, for lunch on Saturday, June 5th. Activities will be occurring throughout the event with great Relay prizes available!
The Luminaria Ceremony at Relay takes place after sundown, honoring the community’s cancer survivors and remembering those lost to the disease. Participants will circle a track that is surrounded with glowing luminaria that bear the name of someone who has battled cancer.
Also a part the Relay For Life of Southwest Allen County is the Fight Back Ceremony, during which Relay participants will be inspired to make his or her own commitment and challenged to make a personal pledge of action (e.g., stop smoking, eat more healthily, exercise regularly, etc.) in fighting back.
To get involved with the Relay For Life of Southwest Allen County please call 260.471.3911 or visit RelayForLife.org/southwestallencountyin .

The American Cancer Society combines an unyielding passion with nearly a century of experience to save lives and end suffering from cancer. As a global grassroots force of more than three million volunteers, we fight for every birthday threatened by every cancer in every community. We save lives by helping people stay well by preventing cancer or detecting it early; by helping people get well by being there for them during and after a cancer diagnosis; by finding cures through investment in groundbreaking discovery; and by fighting back by rallying lawmakers to pass laws to defeat cancer and by rallying communities worldwide to join the fight. As the nation’s largest non-governmental investor in cancer research, contributing about $3.4 billion, we turn what we know about cancer into what we do. As a result, more than 11 million people in America who have had cancer and countless more who have avoided it will be celebrating birthdays this year. To learn more about us or to get help, call us anytime, day or night, at 1-800-227-2345 or visit cancer.org.

If you give your DJ too many “must-play” songs for dancing, your DJ ends up having to “DJ by checklist.” Here’s what’s wrong with DJ’ing by checklist.
A good DJ plays songs that flow well together, taking into account the tempo, the style, and even how the one song ends and how the next one begins. This helps keep the dance floor filled. If he’s DJ’ing from a checklist, you’ll hear more abrupt transitions between one song and the next, which disrupts the flow of energy on the dance floor.
A good DJ reads the crowd and adjusts his set lists based on the responses he’s getting on the dance floor. DJ’ing from a checklist means reading a piece of paper, not reading the crowd.
A good DJ tries to fit in some songs requested by your guests right there at the reception. When your parents, your siblings, or your dearest friends go up to the DJ and request a song they really want to dance to, do you really want him to say “No” because his playlist is already set in stone?
A good DJ, with hundreds of events under his belt, knows all sorts of sure-fire dance music that you, the wedding couple, might not have thought of. You may know a lot of music, but chances are you don’t know all the musical nooks and crannies your DJ does. Do you really want to pay a DJ to NOT utilize his expertise?
Sometimes, the most fervent compilers of “must play” lists are guys who are avid listeners but not big dancers. Ladies, do you want your DJ to be playing your hipster husband’s favorite obscure indie bands that he likes to listen to rather than the songs your bridesmaids and girlfriends want to dance to?
Isn’t it fun to have an element of surprise and spontaneity at your reception? If nearly every song during dancing is one you’ve preselected, you’ve eliminated those sparks of surprise and spontaneity.
Your DJ, if he’s good at his job, WILL incorporate a LOT of the music you specify but will mix it with other music that seems right for the occasion. If you don’t have confidence in your DJs judgment, or doubt your DJ’s commitment to incorporate your favorites while also satisfying your guests’s varied tastes, you should hire a different DJ!
